Born in 2001 following a reorganisation of the Documentation Centre of Ancient Laws (CDDA), the Study Centre of Legal History (CEHJ) and the Centre for the History of Law and Institutions (CHDI), the Institute of the History of Law (IHD) is a research team (MRU 7184) under the direct supervision of Panthéon-Assas University, the Centre national de la Recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the Archives nationales.

As part of the largest French team of law historians in terms of both members and publications, IHD extends its research field to cover the entire chronological period of legal and institutional history since Antiquity:

  • sources of ancient laws,
  • source of medieval and modern law,
  • history of legal institutions,
  • history of family law and rights of individuals,
  • basic concepts,
  • theory and philosophy of criminal law.
